More so than North American cities, big Asian cities come alive at night. The neon fires up, the buildings light, and all the small business’ flourescents pulse out onto the streets. If you have seen Wong Kar-Wai’s Chungking Express, night shots on location in Hong Kong, then you know the beauty. Taipei, Hong Kong, andGZ: all are nocturama.

I have always liked night photography. It’s when the differences between how we see and how cameras see is vastly different. From seconds to minutes to hours – shadows disappear and what hid from us emerges in long exposures. It’s an experiment.

I like the way that the Canon sees thing when it’s pumped up to 1600 or 3200. People complain about the noise but I like it. It’s not film grain, it’s more texture.
